Any person born in Jamaica prior to 5th August 1962, who was on that date a citizen of the United Kingdom and its colonies or any person born in Jamaica after 5thAugust 1962, is a Jamaican citizen by birth.
Some of the advantages of becoming a Jamaican citizen include but are not limited to the ability to:
- Acquire a Jamaican Passport
- Work without a work permit
- Vote in General and Local Government Elections
- Receive Social benefits and get access to government programmes
- Be exempt from international fees at Jamaica’s universities
- Duty free allowance from customs and at the airport as allotted to Jamaican nationals
- Protection under the Constitution and laws of Jamaica
- Register a non-Jamaican Spouse as a citizen of Jamaica
- Citizenship application processing time is 1-2 years.
The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:
- Completed Application for Jamaican Citizenship by descent.
- Applicant’s Birth Certificate/Statement of Live Birth/Certification of birth.
- Applicant’s father’s or mother’s Jamaican Birth Certificate/Adoption Certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Department of Jamaica or Certificate of Jamaican Citizenship (in cases where the applicant is establishing the claim through a parent that acquired citizenship by virtue of marriage before the applicant was born).
- Applicant’s parents’Marriage Certificate, (where applicable).
- Marriage Certificate, (where applicable)
- Applicants’ Valid Identification (Adult age 18 and over).
- Jamaican Parent’s government issued Identification (Valid Passport, Driver’s Licence or Elector Registration Identification Card).
- Official Change of Name Document – Court Order, Deed Polls registered through the court or the Country’s record office, etc (where applicable).
- Two (2) passport sized photographs of the applicant certified by a Justice of the Peace for local applications or by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or Consular Officer, for overseas applications.
- Court issued document evidencing Legal Guardianship where applicable.
Processing Time
Once the above documents are submitted to the High Commission, they are sent to the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) to be processed. Compliant applications will be processed within thirty (30) working days by PICA and then returned to the Jamaican High Commission for dispatch to the applicant.
Fee:
The fee for this application is CAD$110.00. This payment must be made by an International Bank Draft or an International Money Order made payable to the Ministry of National Security of Jamaica.

ALL APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED THROUGH THE JAMAICAN HIGH COMMISSION WILL ATTRACT A CONSULAR FEE OF CAD$13.00 IN ADDITION TO A POSTAGE FEE OF CAD$13.00. A SEPARATE BANK DRAFT OR MONEY ORDER PAYABLE TO THE JAMAICAN HIGH COMMISSION WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE FEES.
A non-Jamaican national having attained the age of eighteen (18) years, who is of good character, lived in Jamaica for a minimum of five (5) years on aggregate and for 12 months immediately preceding submission of the application, is eligible to apply for Jamaican citizenship.
The application should be made (in duplicate) on Naturalisation Form, N1.
The form should be carefully read then completed and signed in the presence of a Justice of the Peace.
Four (4) references are required as sponsors of the application. These persons should be Jamaican by birth and should not be a Civil Servant, a relative, lawyer or agent of the applicant.
Before submitting the application, notice of your intention to apply for Naturalisation must appear in a daily newspaper. An example of the advertisement is set out on the final page of the application form. This notice should be published on two (2) separate occasions at least one (1) week apart and should be submitted along with the application which should not be older than 6 months.
Completed application forms along with newspaper notices should be submitted to the Citizenship Unit of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency along with the following original documents.
The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:
- Applicant’s Birth Certificate/Statement of Live Birth/Certification of birth.
- Marriage certificate / Decree Absolute (if applicable).
- Passport on which the applicant originally entered Jamaica.
- Current Passport (if different from the one above).
- Valid Work Permit Card / Exemption Certificate.
- Personal Tax Compliance Certificate. NB If applicant is the owner of a business, the company Tax Compliance Certificate must be submitted.
- If applicant operates a wholesale/haberdashery then Income Tax Filings with both Personal and Business Tax Compliance Certificates are required.
- Recent Bank Statement (should not be older than 6 months).
- Verification of Income e.g. Employment Letter, Last Three Pay slips, Company Financial Statements, Pension statement (should not be older than 6 months).
- Evidence of any Community activity/Service Club.
- Official change of name Document, Deed Polls must be registered through the court or the Country’s record office, Court Order, (where applicable).
- Two (2) passport sized photographs of the applicant certified by a Justice of the Peace for local applications or by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or Consular Officer, for overseas applications.
Processing Time
Once the above documents are submitted to the High Commission, they are sent to the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) to be processed. Compliant applications will be prepared for submission to the Minister within twenty four (24) months and then returned to the Jamaican High Commission to be dispatched to the applicant.
A Jamaican Passport or Travel Document may be issued on application to a non – Jamaican only after the person has obtained a Certificate of Registration or Naturalization from the appropriate authorities in Jamaica.

A non-Jamaican national is eligible to make an application for citizenship by virtue of Marriage if he or she is married to a Jamaican citizen. The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:
- Completed Application R1 Form.
- Birth Certificate/ Certificate of Jamaican Citizenship and passport of the Jamaican National.
- Birth Certificate and current passport of the applicant (spouse).
- Marriage Certificate.
- Decree Absolute, where applicable.
- Work Permit/ Marriage Exemption Certificate (if resident in Jamaica)
- Recent (at most 6 months old) Police Record of the applicant.
- Verification of Income e.g. Employment Letter, last 3 Pay slips, Company Financial Statements (should not be older than 6 months).
- Recent Bank Statement (should not be older than 6 months).
- A Personal Tax Compliance Certificate. N.B. If applicant is the owner of a business , the company Tax Compliance Certificate must be submitted (if resident in Jamaica)

A Commonwealth national who has resided legitimately in Jamaica for at least five (5) consecutive years, and is of good character, may make an application to become a Jamaican citizen.
The application form for Registration as a Citizen of Jamaica for an adult should be completed in duplicate and signed before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.
The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:
- Applicant’s original Birth Certificate.
- Passport on which the applicant originally entered Jamaica and current passport, if different.
- Work permit or exemption certificate or contract.
- Evidence of community activities in which the applicant is involved, for example, service club, etc.
- Tax Compliance Certificate.
- Two (2) passport-size photographs certified by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.
- Verification of income.
- Recent bank statements.
Once all documents are submitted in good order, the application process begins. Where an application is approved, the applicant will be required to pay the Canadian equivalent of J$7,000.00 to complete the process.
The application form for Registration as a Citizen of Jamaica for a minor should be signed before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.
The form should be read carefully it must be completed by a parent or the Guardian of the Minor and signed in the presence of by a before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

- Minor’s Birth Certificate
- Minor’s Passport
- Parents’ Marriage Certificate
- Parents’ Passport
- Evidence of parent(s) Jamaican Nationality (if citizen of Jamaica)
- Work Permit of parent(s)
- Tax Compliance Certificate of parent(s)
- Two (2) passport-size photographs certified by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.
- Two (2) references to sponsor the application. These persons should be Jamaican by birth and should not be a Civil Servant, a relative, a lawyer or an agent of the applicant.
